Reading Station Forecourt Goes Cable Cover-Free with Charge Gully
We're thrilled to share one of our latest installations — and it's a great one. Reading Borough Council has transformed the forecourt of Reading Station by replacing unsightly cable covers with the Charge Gully system, delivering a cleaner, safer, and smarter public space right in the heart of one of the UK's busiest commuter hubs.
The Problem
Like many busy urban forecourts, Reading Station faced a familiar challenge. Power cables supplying the popular food trucks outside the station had to cross pedestrian areas, and the solution — bulky yellow and blue cable covers — was far from ideal. Raised off the ground and visually jarring, they created real trip hazards for pedestrians and obstacles for cyclists on what is also a national cycle route. Something had to give.

The Solution
Working with Reading Borough Council's Highways team, we installed our solid aluminium Charge Gully channel across the forecourt. The result speaks for itself: a flat, flush finish that sits seamlessly within the existing paving, with nothing to trip over and nothing to spoil the view.
Sam Shean, Head of Highways at Reading Borough Council, summed it up well: ““The cost-effective Charge Gully system neatly conceals the power cables to the food trucks outside Reading Station. The installation work was quick and cost efficient compared to permanently burying power cables within ducts, and we now have a flat and flush solution that blends in well with the aesthetic of our Station forecourt on a national cycle route.”
And after.
Built to Last
The Charge Gully system isn't just good-looking. Rated EN 1433 D400, our solid aluminium channel is engineered to handle heavy loads and high footfall day after day. The patent-pending locking mechanism keeps cables secure and tamper-proof, while the hinged lid means authorised access remains quick and easy whenever it's needed.
A Blueprint for Urban Spaces
Reading Station is a perfect example of what Charge Gully was designed for — high-profile, high-footfall locations where aesthetics, safety, and practicality all matter. Whether it's a station forecourt, a market square, or a pedestrianised high street, we can help you ditch the cable covers for good.
