Charge Gully on-street EV charging systems are being trialled in Suffolk

Suffolk County Council brings an innovative charging solution to residents without off-street parking

Suffolk County Council has launched a 12-month trial of the Charge Gully on-street EV charging solution, offering residents without off-street parking a new opportunity to charge their electric cars more affordably and conveniently.

The trial, run by Suffolk County Council in collaboration with Charge Gully, involves Charge Gully installations at 12 properties in Suffolk. It aims to address a significant barrier to EV ownership: access to home charging for people who park on the street.

Currently, around 25% of households in Suffolk do not have off-street parking and must rely on public chargers located in car parks. Charge Gully offers a user-friendly, cost-effective solution that enables residents to charge their electric vehicle from their home electricity supply while parked on the street.

The system uses a lockable channel installed in the pavement outside the property. Residents can run the charging cable through the channel to safely charge their vehicle without causing a trip hazard on the footway.

Ian March, Director of Charge Gully, said: “We are glad to bring our solution to Suffolk residents which will help with the adoption of EVs and the climate benefits that they bring along.”

Charging at home using Charge Gully is up to 10 times cheaper than using public chargers, making the switch to EVs more accessible and appealing to a wider range of residents.

Insights gathered from the trial will help shape future on-street charging solutions in Suffolk.

Suffolk County Council said: “The aim of this 12-month trial is to enable our Highways team to determine which charging channel product, if any, we will make available to all residents based on user-experience and other factors.”

By exploring practical EV charging solutions, the trial aims to support the UK Government’s target to ensure 100% of new cars are zero-emission by 2035. Improving access to home charging is an important step in encouraging EV adoption and supporting local climate action goals.
